This installment of Philly House Shows takes us deep into South Philly’s Grays Ferry neighborhood for a recent round of living room-based performances featuring Brooklyn’s With Knives with support from local guests Carved Up, Cavale, and Lonesummer.
Braving the Philly Summer heat and humidity, this house show was hosted by Cavale drummer Beth Murphy, at what her and her amiable cast of roomies have affectionately dubbed, “The Pussy Den.”
Brooklyn’s With Knives is the brainchild of bassist Josh Newton who has performed with such bands as Every Time I Die, Shiner, Season To Risk, and The Damned Things. The band came into fruition with the addition of permanent vocalist and guitarist Joe Trohman (ex Fall Out Boy and The Damned Things) with drummer Rob Smith (Riddle of Steel, Traindodge) taking over dutites on the skins. This show was in support of With Knives‘ debut EP, Schadenfreude, which was self released for free on band’s label imprint, Son Of Man Records earlier this year. The band’s performance proved to emit an engaging and eclectic blend of smooth psychedelic rock and stoner-drenched, bluesy metal. Despite “not getting any sleep the night before,” the band fired off a barrage of tunes that made the house all but forget about the relentlessly humid air.
There was no lack of heat or moisture as openers Lonesummer broke into a noisy performance riddled with chaotic rock structures and glaring distortions that screamed into the night.
One had to feel for the kind of night Carved Up had. The band offered a solid performance with its intriguing mix of post-hardcore, space rock, and heavy rock ‘n’ roll that sounded excellent per usual.
But the rock gods would take a sacrifice.
Upon load out, little did Carved Up guitarists/bassist TJ Schilling know he would enter his key into his trunk for the last time. In an effort to load his rig, TJ firmly turned the key in the trunk lock as he had done on countless other occasions. But days of good fortune came to an abrupt halt, as TJ effortlessly snapped the key off inside the lock before opening any other entrances to the vehicle. So as it were, the Carved Up boys were stationed outside waiting on a locksmith for the rest of the evening.
The third band to see a performance from guitarist/vocalist James Gross on the evening, Cavale, hit the stage and set forth a blaze of dense guitar-effect-laden riffs, all rock-tinged and driving. The busy guitar work was complimented by a flawless effort from drummer, Beth Murphy, who had no trouble stirring the crammed masses in what proved to be another solid Philly House Show.
